Later this summer, Boris Johnson — the former Mayor of London whose calculated buffoonery masks a complete absence of principle — will almost certainly become prime minister, after being elected to the post by Conservative MPs and party members. It’ll be another horrible milestone — the political equivalent of painting a giant clown mask on the face of the country. Britain will be giving up any claim to be a serious nation. How did we get here? How did an advanced democratic society dismantle itself so quickly?

This paragraph, as well as numerous other parts of your story are glaring parallels between the UK and the US. We too, are baffled at the madness. At the disregard for objective reality.

As a certified anglophile I have been following this fairly closely. Boris Johnson becoming PM is not unlike Trump getting elected because a fair portion of the electorate cannot distinguish between reality and Reality Television.
