Pyramid scheme. That phrase does not mean what you think it means.
Still, I see your point: Medium should provide you and others a platform free of charge to ply your skills in the hope of making money, but your not willing to give 5 bucks a month back towards supporting other writers. You should be able to post, make money, and not participate in any other way.
I'm pretty sure there is a phrase for that.
